Details of the Italian Certifications

CELI – Certificate of Knowledge of the Italian Language

The certificate of the Italian Language (CELI) is a title that accredits the degree of linguist competence and control of Italian given by the University for Foreigners of Perugia.

The CELI certificate is officially recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education and also internationally recognized by private companies, chambers of commerce and private and public educational institutions.

The exam leading to a certificate is independent of former exams so the candidates can choose freely the level (there are 5 levels of the exam) and the certification that they consider adequate for their preparation and aims.

CILS – The Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language

CILS is a certificate of Italian as a second language, measures and assesses the level of competence a student has reached in the Italian language. It is useful for those who have a desire to work and study in Italy, or simply for those who wish to evaluate their competence in the Italian language.

The CILS covers four levels. Each of these represents a progressively higher level of linguistic and communicative ability. Each CILS level is autonomous and complete: the certification for each level represents a degree of communicative ability which is adequate for specific social, professional and scholastic contexts.

Awarded by the prestigious University of Siena for Foreigners, the certificate is legally recognized as an official certification of linguistic competence.

The Certification test is designed on the principles of the communicative approach and it is based on real-life tasks which test the ability to apply knowledge of the language within the chosen level, in the four linguistic skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
